Lilt Reader Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 27, 2026
Lilt Reader is published by Einherjar Ventures LLC ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Lilt Reader app for iPhone and iPad.
The short version
Lilt Reader does not collect, store or share your personal information. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your books, audiobooks, transcripts, reading progress and settings stay on your device. Narration, speech recognition and audiobook syncing all run on your device.
Information on your device
- Books and audiobooks you import from the Files app or download from Audiobookshelf, Plex, Project Gutenberg or LibriVox are stored inside the app on your device.
- Transcripts, sync data and text written from audiobooks are created on your device and stay there.
- Reading progress, bookmarks and settings are stored on your device.
- Audiobookshelf and Plex sign-in tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain on your device.
We have no copy of any of this and cannot see it. Some of it may be included in your own device or iCloud backups, according to your iOS settings. Audiobooks downloaded from Audiobookshelf are excluded from backups, because they can be downloaded again.
On-device processing
- Narration uses voices that run on your device: the included Kokoro neural voices, or the iOS system voice.
- Speech recognition for syncing audiobooks and turning them into text uses Apple's on-device speech recognition, or Whisper models that run on your device. Your audio is never uploaded for recognition.
Connections the app makes
Lilt Reader connects to the internet only for the following purposes. None of these connections include your books, audio, transcripts or reading activity, unless noted.
- Your Audiobookshelf server. If you sign in to an Audiobookshelf server, the app connects to the server address you enter. It sends your username and password only to that server, and downloads the books, audio and covers you choose. That server is operated by you or by whoever runs it, not by us.
- Plex. If you sign in to Plex, you approve Lilt Reader on Plex's own sign-in page (plex.tv); your Plex password is never entered into or seen by the app. The app then asks plex.tv for the list of servers your account can use, and connects to the server you choose to browse it and download the audiobooks you pick. For audiobooks downloaded from Plex, the app reports your listening position in that audiobook to your Plex server while you listen, so other Plex players can continue from the same place; your server may share this with Plex's services according to your Plex settings. The server is operated by you or whoever runs it, and Plex's handling of information is covered by the Plex Privacy Policy.
- Project Gutenberg and LibriVox. If you use Free Classics, the app searches Project Gutenberg's catalog (gutenberg.org) and LibriVox's catalog (librivox.org), and downloads the books you choose from Project Gutenberg and their audiobooks from the Internet Archive (archive.org). These requests contain your search words and the books you pick, and, like any download, reveal your device's IP address to those sites.
- Hugging Face. If you choose a Whisper speech recognizer, its model files are downloaded once from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Like any download, this reveals your device's IP address to Hugging Face. See the Hugging Face Privacy Policy.
- Apple. Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your name, payment details or Apple ID. Apple shares sales reports with us that do not identify you. iOS may also download Apple's speech recognition models. Apple's handling of this information is covered by the Apple Privacy Policy.
- Sale schedule. The app may download a small file from our website that says when a sale is running. This request contains no information about you beyond what any web request reveals, such as your IP address. We do not use it to identify or track you.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Lilt Reader shows notifications created on your device, for example when an audiobook finishes downloading or syncing. We do not use a notification service, and we cannot send you notifications.
Permissions
The app may ask for these permissions. You can change them at any time in the iOS Settings app.
- Notifications: to tell you when a download or sync finishes.
- Local network: to reach an Audiobookshelf or Plex server on your home network.
- Speech recognition: to recognize the speech in your audiobooks on your device.
Children
Lilt Reader is not directed at children under 13, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Deleting your information
Deleting a book or audiobook in the app removes its files from your device. Deleting the app removes everything it stored. Because we hold no information about you, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
